Traditional Kitchen Designs

When people think of traditional kitchen they usually think about something that is bland and boring. In reality this design is considered to be elegant and formal. It uses a blend of European and American design from homes during the 18th and 19th centuries. There are a few traditional styles to consider.

Victorian

Nothing speaks elegance more than a Victorian design. This uses raised panels, cathedral arch doors, and ornate molding and trim. The darker, heavier woods are the best to use and help to create a more dramatic and formal feeling. You don’t always have to use high quality materials – but it helps to complete the look of it all.

Italianate

This is similar to Victorian – but it focuses more on the cabinets and the details surrounding it. Expect to use intricate and elegant molding and trim and raised paneling. Each cabinet is painted cream and is designed with rope molding and custom carved reliefs.

Georgian

The Georgian traditional kitchen design is more about being formal than simple elegance. It is best to stick with woods like walnut, cherry, and mahogany. The square panel raised doors are some of the best to use. They are designed with crown molding and use stacked cabinetry that usually reaches the ceiling. Black accents helps to pull the whole look together – but it is not necessary.

Colonial

The Colonial design is one of the more unique and is more rustic than formal. It is best to stick with darker colors. The cabinets should have a vintage, almost cracked look about them. Intricate molding and accents helps to create the feel that you are in a true Colonial kitchen.
