Kitchen Lighting Designs

The kitchen is considered by many to be the most important room in their home when it comes to entertaining their friends and family. It is where they cook delicious meals and often times where they will serve it. It is for this reason that you want to use the best and most comforting lighting for your kitchen.

There are four different types of lighting that you are able to use in your kitchen. Each of these are designed to accentuate certain parts of the kitchen, add light in otherwise dark areas, and to help make smaller kitchens appear much bigger. The cost of these lighting techniques will vary between $20 to $300 depending on the amount of fixtures your require and how decorative you wish them to be.

Task Lighting

True to its name this type of lighting is used to help provide people with light over the areas where they usually prepare the food. This is installed an appropriate distance between the work surface and the person preparing the food. The most common task lighting that you can find in any kitchen is the kind that is installed over the stovetop.

Another place that you can put these is over a kitchen island to replace the ceiling light. These usually extend down from the ceiling and hover right over the center of the kitchen island.

Accent Kitchen Lighting

This is a smaller type of lighting that is used in the kitchen. These do not usually cost much and have very low voltage so as not to run your energy bill up. The majority of these are installed inside of cabinets to show off special china or glassware.

Ambient Kitchen Lighting

This type of kitchen lighting is one of the most advantageous and helps to immediately improve the appearance of your kitchen. It is sad that so few people actually think to use this. These extra lights help to give your kitchen a soft glow and is usually used on a small portion of the kitchen. It helps to provide lighting at night when no one is using it without using a great deal of energy.

Decorative Kitchen Lighting

This type of kitchen lighting is optional and helps to accentuate certain parts of the kitchen to give it a unique look. This can be more expensive then the others and should be used in moderation. Too much of this lighting can actually cause your kitchen to look cluttered.
