Designing A Kitchen Layout

When remodeling and designing a new kitchen you have to know every inch of what is going to change. Before you begin you should know what materials are being used and where everything will be placed. One of the best ways to bring all of this information together is to design a kitchen layout.

The first thing you need to do is determine what type of layout would be best to use in your home. Think about how much space you have available and what features you wish to use in it. For example; in a small space you might create a one wall kitchen with all of the cabinets and appliances up against one wall. In bigger kitchens you might design a U-shaped kitchen with an island in the center of it.

Next you need to design what is referred to as the ‘work triangle’. This is made up of the sink, refrigerator, and stove. This triangle will help you to improve upon the flow of each area and to make them more efficient. You must make sure they are not too close or too far apart.

How much do you cook? If you love to prepare meals for large gatherings or if you have a large family you might need to add extra prep areas. Maybe you could use two sinks instead of one or you can have more counter space. Most people will add an island and use it for extra cabinet and counter space.

It is important that you have the right amount of electrical outlets and that they are placed in a convenient area. You should have between one to two sets of outlets next to each counter. Also you will need to decide on what type of lighting to use and where it should be placed.

When you have all these details you will be ready to create the layout. Draw out the layout on graph paper. You will need to measure the area and the size of each appliance. If you cannot draw well you should consider using design software.
